Week 9 Reflection

I may have once again overthought making my work. It’s hard to notice whether I am overthinking or not while I work- my deep thinking into each thing that I do is part of what makes my work what it is (even my quicksketches are like a logic puzzle sometimes). For example, my powerpoint portfolio for my work is a point of interest. It needs to sum up my entire project. This, is not an easy task for me.

“This is an artistic, creative brief to be fulfilled however you see fit but is also crucial to get correct to fully convey the complexity and ‘groundbreaking’ nature of your project to show deserving of distinction since it might be the only thing the examiner looks at.” -Gareth. I also use my portfolio to show that I can collate and organise my work for someone to view.

I thought of many ways to accomplish this goal, from presenting it as a graphic novel, to a book, to setting the PowerPoint inside my illustrations but decided on simple compilings of my work into collages showing the progression. This includes directionless mindmaps and funnelling mood boards, almost comic-like progressions of development pages, and single images. I want the layout to represent the way that I created the work while also being visually easy to interpret. Doing it this way I thought would be more easily digestible and professional.

In talks with Gareth he suggested splitting up some of my compositions to help with readability and in selling my illustrative specialism, some of which I agreed with and some of which I reordered to make them flow better instead. I went for a mostly white background with occasional variations like wood, stone and tiling that give a nice mid-tone for the pages to pop out from which I think adds some visual interest (and takes inspiration from the combination pieces of Dave McKean, a big inspiration for my work). I debated with Gareth on the use of these textures and took them out of some collages to improve visual clarity but left them in some of the more stripped back compositions.
