Week 6 – Half Term

I highly doubt theres an answer to my questions, but there’s probably an industry standard or a pattern to the progression of art in some way. Maybe a psychological analysis would be interesting? Fine art is such a broad and desperate field that it feels as though something must be underpinning it- a logic- and Hockney’s art seems to follow a simple version of this meta-chasing. Maybe having my process validated this way is useful, or maybe, indicated by the lack of literature on him, Hockney is a diluted and derivative artist, and by looking at his process and work, I take on these traits by osmosis. I will investigate more literature and find out! How fun 🙂

The cup design is progressing- I’ve set myself a large target to complete so might use it conceptually on a large scale rather than commit to finishing it all. I’m actually quite pleased with the idea, and the process of making the different elements is fun. Want to hear about it? Good good.

The basic idea is one of decolonising and recommissioning art for the public; starting conversations, and conversations about art, specifically about the question I ask- what is art and what does it take to be fine art? Is it touching people? Does that inherently make relatable things better art? Is it the opposite? Is it in fact the more abstract, obscure pieces that are intellectual challenges to decipher meaning from that are real art? Is it a combination of both, do they have to be interesting and engaging pieces that provoke both thought and emotion on experiencing them? Does art have to progress academic thought to be considered academically great? Who really cares? Is art really just a big game of clout-chasing to sell for insane amounts? The implication of Bosch through composition is also tactical, his work is highly speculated on by scholars, who know very little of his personal life normally used to find meaning in other artists work. This enigmatic nature is not only enthralling to me and modern gothic audiences, it also shows the intention for this work to be openly and broadly speculated about with little/no knowledge of its creator or context other than its location. The second purpose is to bring attention to smaller coffee businesses by bringing contemporary art to them as a collectible selling point, and an interesting promotional.

Finally, if art really is a true chaotic progression then that is interesting in itself to me and I’m interested to know that too!
