Week 4

Week 4 was interesting, I started like any other so far, but made quite large shifts in my thought process by the end. I think this kind of conflict is important for me, having experienced it before each of my other larger pieces, although I’m not totally sure whether this one will lead to a single outcome or just a shift in my thought process.

In other news it was fun to do collaborative work on a contextual build. Historically I have a record of not enjoying group work, however, I think maybe the dynamic is very key to that. I think the hardest part of group work for me is the conflict that evolves from multiple leadership positions without anyone higher in the heirarchy to moderate, which is a fault I’d like to address but not one present in this project. I was able to fulfil my role and help out the other members rather than make the key decisions, instead suggesting smaller improvements such as painted colours on the floor underneath, more spokes, and leaving partial cover underneath to allow plant growth etc. and creating the initial concept art from everyone’s contributions. I think this position is easier than a leadership role when objections can be made to decisions, and even when they can’t there is the pressure to get it right, however, I didn’t not enjoy playing my part regardless.

Another noteworthy experience was sound art. I surprised myself by being interested in the philosophy of sound art- decolonising and demonetising the meaning of art, removing the capitalistic traits imposed by our society on the art form. I think this concept will really affect me going forward, especially recontextualising into other artists I admire, I’m interested to see where it goes. Actually using the sound doesn’t quite appeal to me in the same way however.
